The Academy started life as the Northern College of Beauty and Holistic Therapies and was established in 1989 by Jan. In 2003 Joy who is now a Director and co-owner of the Platinum Academy, joined her.
This is their story;
Jan qualified, as a therapist late in life and as a mature student was soon to realise that although there were a variety of private and public colleges where you could attend courses, most of them catered for the younger student. To enable her to gain the qualifications she needed she travelled long distances. After spending some years abroad and working in her own salons she realised after advertising for staff without success that the demand for therapists was growing and the realisation that the mature student who was in great demand; meaning anyone from 20 to 60 years of age who had so much to give to the industry, had nowhere they felt comfortable to train. Students often felt working alongside 16 to 18 year olds intimidating as often they may have either been away from training or the workforce for some time and were looking for a new direction and not used to the classroom situation. Jan being a single parent herself had the idea of opening a College offering small intensive courses suiting people with family commitments or wanting a change in their career. Her greatest ambition was realised when she opened the College, which enabled those very students to gain qualifications and achieve their own goals in a safe and friendly atmosphere
Joy spent most of her working career in PR and running her own business. Once her children had grown up and left home she decided a change in direction was needed and took an intensive beauty therapy course. After travelling and working abroad teaching English and beauty therapy Joy decided to come back to England and be with her family and grandchild. Joy joined Jan on her return to England in 2003.
In 2004 Jan and Joy decided to re-brand the Northern College of Beauty to Platinum Academy due to the National and International growth in the beauty industry increasing the need for trained therapist and new salon and mobile services.
The Academy, which is dedicated to training in beauty, nail extensions and holistic therapy, offer Academy certificates, National and International qualifications.
All our highly qualified tutors have industry experience, which is reflected in their teaching methods. We believe in Equality of Opportunity keeping the intensive beauty class’s small enabling each student to have constant attention from tutors.
Our policy is for students to contact the Academy after completion if they feel that advice is needed at any time, this in turn enables them to maintain high industry standards.
